Japanese officials
announced that the Agricultural Ministry will hold two weeks
of public meetings concerning proposed reopening of the
Japanese market to U.S. beef. The 10 meetings will take
place across the country beginning June 1, and officials
will use public feedback in making any final decision to
allow resumption of beef imports from the United States.
The schedule means that it is highly unlikely that a decision
will be reached before Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
meets with U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington D.C.
in mid-June.
