Robert L. Madeira, who joined the American Association of
Meat Processors in 1951, when it was still known as the
National Frozen Food Locker Institute, died at his home
Aug.16 of natural causes. He was 89.
Madeira retired as executive director of AAMP in 1981, but
continued to serve as executive director emeritus until
1986. He doubled as AAMP's main lobbyist in Washington,
D.C., and he was a driving force in building AAMP to its
present size, with 1,700 medium and smaller sized processors,
packers, wholesalers and retailers, mostly in the United
States and Canada.
"Bob could reach every one of us on a very personal level
and showed that he cared not only about the organization
he worked for, but for the lives of those who worked by
his side as well," said Steve Krut, who succeeded Madeira
as chief executive of AAMP in 1981.
