National Guardsman serving in Iraq will soon get a taste
of home, thanks to Missouri meat processors and the state's
cattle industry.
The
Missouri Association of Meat Processors (MAMP) and its members,
in conjunction with the Missouri Cattlemen's Association,
Missouri Beef Industry Council, Farm Credit Services of
Missouri and the Missouri Farm Bureau Federation have teamed
up to ship individual, vacuum-sealed packages of beef sticks
to nearly 1000 guardsman in Iraq.
"We
just wanted to do something to thank the guardsmen of our
state who have left their homes, families and regular jobs
to serve our nation under difficult circumstances," said
MAMP Project Coordinator Roger Alewel. "Our goal was to
remind them of home, and this product is all Missouri grown,
produced, processed and packaged."
The
beef was donated by Missouri cattle producers and members
of the MAMP provided the processing. Other organizations,
businesses and individuals have also contributed to the
effort by donating funds for shipping or other services
(see separate list). The cost of the project is over $30,000.
The
Missouri beef packages were mailed to the troops on June
