As part of USDA's overall initiative to improve animal handling and food safety oversight, Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer is touring four meat processing plants in Nebraska this week.

With him is Richard Raymond, previously the chief medical officer for the state of Nebraska and now USDA under secretary for food safety.

Schafer's itinerary includes the Hormel Foods pork processing plant in Fremont, a Cargill Meat Solutions beef plant in Schuyler, the MBA Poultry plant in Tecumseh and the world headquarters for Omaha Steaks, in Omaha.

It's the secretary's first visit to Nebraska since taking office in January. Last month, Schafer toured meat and poultry processing plants in Texas. (See Schafer holds firm on ethanol policy as corn prices rise on Meatingplace.com , June 13, 2008.)
