About 15,000 pounds of U.S. beef arrived in Taiwan on Saturday and cleared customs that evening. The beef will now undergo examination by top food safety officials from the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, and should reach restaurants and supermarkets by Tuesday.

Taiwan, like South Korea, allows only boneless beef from animals under 30 months of age to enter the country from the United States.

Taiwan had lifted its ban on U.S. beef last April, but reimposed it in early June when the United States reported that an earlier case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, originally reported as a negative test result, was in fact the country's first native case of BSE. The Taiwanese government came under intense criticism, particularly from cattle farmers and consumer groups, for what was seen as a hasty decision to reopen its market.
