USMEF Member Participation Request:  Processed Meats Workshop

The United States Meat Export Federation (USMEF) is preparing to launch an innovative and broad-based activity for processed meats members, designed to enhance the image and impact of U.S. processed meats items in international markets and assist USMEF members with targeted marketing efforts. This initiative, to be launched in the spring of 2004, has three primary objectives:

1.   Provide useful and accurate information pertaining to the U.S. processed meats industry, including core information about the various categories of processed meats items; Cured Whole Muscle Meats; Sausage Items and Canned Meat Items. Core resource materials will outline the features and benefits of products in the categories, points of difference offered by U.S. products and food safety benefits of U.S. integrated processing systems.

2.   Provide an opportunity for USMEF members to interact and meet potential new customers at workshops in targeted markets, including key potential markets of Japan, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan and China. Workshop activities will feature presentations to participants about U.S. processed meats items as well as product demonstrations and samplings, and a USMEF member showcase or mini trade show, whereby members will be encouraged to display processed meats items and interact with potential customers.

3.   Create a USMEF Branded Processed Meats DVD Disc: "USMEF's Virtual Country Store". In an attempt to promote branded processed meats items produced by members, USMEF will collect, translate and produce a comprehensive promotional DVD featuring company specific products, contact information and promotional materials. This disc will be formatted such that each USMEF member with product in one or more of the three aforementioned categories (Cured Whole Muscle Meats, Sausage Items and/or Canned Meats) is able to showcase their company and products to an international marketplace. Contents of the DVD disc will be translated into five languages, with all languages and programs contained on one disc for easy distribution and use.

USMEF members who produce items in any of the three categories are invited to participate in the workshop series, as well as provide promotional and informational materials for inclusion in the DVD disc. USMEF has contracted with an outside production company to gather promotional materials and generate the DVD disc, and will work with interested members to communicate the appropriate marketing story for international customers.

Please indicate your willingness to participate in this branded, value-added processed meats workshop and DVD disc program by communicating with Kevin Smith, Manager of Export Services, in the Denver office. Disc production is to begin immediately, with a completed DVD disc anticipated by April of 2004. As such, the deadline for notification of participation is February 20, 2004, after which time USMEF members are encouraged to participate in the workshops, but will not be able to have promotional materials incorporated into the DVD disk. USMEF is requesting that interested members submit information they would like included on the DVD by March 1, 2004 to facilitate completion of the project. Please, feel free to contact Kevin Smith if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Kevin Smith
