Uruguayan beef exports reached record levels during May, with exports totaling 26,100 metric tons, according to Meat and Livestock Australia. This was a 39 percent increase over last year -- and two percent higher than the previous record. The value of beef exports for May rose 48 percent compared to last year, to US$ 68 million, MLA said. Australia is one of the largest beef-exporting countries and closely monitors competitors.

During the first five months of 2005, Uruguayan beef exports totaled 119,000 metric tons worth A$303 million -- increases of 22 and 27 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The United States remained the major destination for Uruguayan beef shipments during May, accounting for 76 percent of Uruguayan beef exports, with the majority of the 19,800 metric tons of frozen product (18,400 tons). During the five months to May, exports to the United States accounted for 74 percent of exports, totaling 88,500 metric tons.
