Stuart Alexander, the so-called "Sausage King" who received
the death penalty in February for the murders of three meat
inspectors, was found dead in his cell at San Quentin State
Prison. Alexander had been under constant video surveillance,
with guards checking on him every 15 minutes, after he was
placed on suicide watch on Christmas Eve. Prison officials
reported that while Alexander had repeated treatment for
mental illness, he was physically healthy. Guards had checked
on Alexander at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and found him
sleeping normally; a cell check 15 minutes later found him
not breathing and unresponsive.
Alexander was convicted in 2004 of shooting three meat inspectors
in 2000. The three plus a fourth who escaped had visited
his Santos Linguisa Factory in San Leandro, Calif. to close
it down for repeated food-safety violations. "At long last,
the victims have some justice," said John Quadros, the brother
of one of the inspectors, in a Los Angeles Times article.
An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday and results are expected
within three weeks.
