The Food and Drug Administration is expected to issue a final rule approving the sale of meat and milk to the public from cloned livestock as early as next week, The Wall Street Journal reported.

FDA in late 2006 declared meat and milk products from cloned livestock safe for public consumption, but had asked producers to abstain from selling products from the cloned animals until a final ruling was issued. (See FDA: Cloned animal products are edible on Meatingplace.com, Dec. 29, 2007.)

That conclusion prompted a firestorm of negative reactions from consumer groups. Some retailers, including Whole Foods and Wild Oats, also said they would refrain from selling the products if and when they became available, despite support from the scientific community of FDA's stance.
