Canada Urges Japan To Resume Canadian Beef Imports

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin is urging Japan to resume imports of Canadian beef that was banned after an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Canada in May 2003, according to Japan's Foreign Ministry.

Martin met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to discuss the matter during the Group of Eight industrialized nations summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. Koizumi replied that food safety is a high priority in Japan and that Japan would continue to make a "scientific consideration," the ministry said in a statement issued to Japanese reporters in Edinburgh.
