Canadian Prime Minister
Paul Martin is urging Japan to resume imports of Canadian
beef that was banned after an outbreak of bovine spongiform
encephalopathy in Canada in May 2003, according to Japan's
Foreign Ministry.
Martin met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
to discuss the matter during the Group of Eight industrialized
nations summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. Koizumi replied
that food safety is a high priority in Japan and that Japan
would continue to make a "scientific consideration," the
ministry said in a statement issued to Japanese reporters
in Edinburgh.
