A number of food industry organizations have launched the Center for Food Integrity, an organization devoted to increasing consumer trust and understanding of the contemporary U.S. food system.

The center combines the Grow America Project and Best Food Nation, two national initiatives established in 2006 to increase public understanding about the food system. "There were a lot of common objectives between the two organizations, so it made sense to bring them together," Jim Fallon, director of communications for the Center for Food Integrity, told Meatingplace.com . "I don't think there was any big impetus or triggering event [for launching the new initiative]."

The center's first project will be coordinating teams to provide strategic leadership for addressing five key issues: health and nutrition, food safety, worker care, environment and food animal well-being. "Those are recurring issues on our members' radar," Fallon said.

Based in Kansas City, Mo., the Center for Food Integrity is a not-for-profit corporation supported by more than 20 organizations including the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Chicken Council, the National Council of Chain Restaurants and the National Pork Board.
