China will continue
to ban imports of cattle, beef and related products from
the United States following confirmation of the United States'
first native case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, China's
Ministry of Agriculture announced late last week.
The ministry also intends to adopt new measures, including
quarantine and tougher production management, to prevent
the occurrence of BSE in China, according to ministry spokesman
Jia Youling.
To date, China has tested 10,000 cattle for BSE, and all
have returned negative results.
China has banned U.S. cattle and beef imports since December
2003, when the United States discovered its first case of
BSE.
