Unable
to reconcile differences between the House and Senate versions
of the 2007 farm bill by a March 15 deadline, the Senate
Tuesday night voted to extend the 2002 farm bill to April
18, 2008.
"Although a new bill is within reach, Congress needs more
time to reach agreement and obtain the necessary cooperation
from the White House," Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman
Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said in a statement.
Funding levels for such programs as crop loan rates and
target prices have been a sticking point between legislators
and the Bush administration.
The House is expected to vote on the farm bill extension
as early as today.
