USDA said its Food Safety and Inspection Service will conduct a survey on August 1 to determine how many FSIS-regulated slaughter and processing plants have voluntarily adopted functional food defense plans.

A food defense plan puts measures in place that reduce the chances of someone intentionally contaminating the food supply in order to kill or hurt people, disrupt the economy or ruin a business.

Guidance materials, including a food defense self-assessment checklist for
slaughter and processing plant security, can be accessed here

A food defense podcast describing the functions of FSIS' Office of Food Defense and Emergency Response can be accessed here.
