Robert L. Madeira, 89, formerly Chief Executive Officer and Washington Lobbyist for the American Association of Meat Processors with offices in Elizabethtown, died on Tuesday, August 16, 2005, of natural causes at his home.

A former resident of Elizabethtown, he resided at Willow Valley Manor North, 660 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA. He was the son of the late Isaac T. and Elsie Lehman Madeira.

Madeira was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Evans Madeira, formerly of Lancaster, who died in July 1991. The couple met as piano students of the late Earle W. Echternach of Lancaster. They were married in 1938 at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, Pa. In the early years of their marriage, both of the Madeiras were pianists and teachers. They gave a number of duo-piano concerts and were well known in local music circles.

Early in 1941, Madeira went to work for the U.S. Air Force as an instrument mechanic, working in Middletown, Pa. and at the Columbia Army Air Base, Columbia, S.C. From 1942 until the end of World War II, he was employed in the engineering department of Minneapolis Honeywell s Aero Division in Chicago, building electronic automatic pilots for the Air Force.

After the close of World War II, the Madeiras returned to Pennsylvania where he took over management of Iceland, Inc., a family owned frozen food locker and meat processing plant in Elizabethtown. As the result of becoming active in the industry s state and national associations, he was appointed in late 1950 as Executive Director of the National organization, which moved from Chicago to Elizabethtown that eventually became known as the American Association of Meat Processors. Serving as the organization s chief executive officer for 30 years, he retired fully in 1985 after five years as a consultant to the organization.

During his career, Madeira traveled extensively, visiting over fifty countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and the Orient. He conducted travel seminars for his association members, which included visits to meat processing facilities in many foreign countries.

A 1933 graduate of Elizabethtown High School, Madeira attended Juniata College and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Elizabethtown College. He also took courses at Honeywell s Aeronautical Engineering School at the University of Minnesota.

Active in local civic affairs, he served as chairman of fund drives for the American Red Cross, Elizabethtown Community Chest, the Elizabethtown Community Park and Norlanco Medical Center. A Rotarian for many years, he was active during the 50s and 60s in Elizabethtown Community Concerts and was a founding member, together with his wife, of the Elizabethtown Music Foundation. He was an organizer of the Lancaster County Frozen Food Locker Buying Cooperative, a past director of the Norlanco Medical Center and the National Frozen Food Locker Association, and past president of the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Frozen Food Locker Association.

Among the honors Madeira received were the Man of the Year Award from the National Institute of Locker and Freezer Provisioners, the Achievement Award from the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, and the Key Award from the American Society of Association Executives. A Chartered Association Executive, Madeira served on various committees with the United States Chamber of Commerce, the American Society of Association Executives and the National Association of Exhibit Managers. He taught trade association management courses in Seminars sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at Yale University, Syracuse University, and Michigan State University.

Madeira was an active Christian layman and supporter of many evangelical causes. A Presbyterian for most of his life, he served as choir member, Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder in several congregations. At the time of his death he was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.

During their retirement years together, the Madeiras returned to their first love, playing classical music written for two pianos. They made many recordings, which they distributed, freely, to relatives and friends.

Madeira is survived by two daughters, Terry Harsney, wife of Karl Harsney of Fairlawn, Ohio, and Chase Landre, wife of Kenneth Kettle of Bradenton, Florida. Also surviving are a sister, Helen Cox, of Lancaster, and two brothers, the Reverend Eugene Madeira of Penney Farms, Florida, and the Reverend Doctor David Madeira of Cromwell, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hernley Madeira of Sacramento, California.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at Willow Valley Manor North in the Johnson Auditorium at 10:30 AM with Dr. Michael Rogers, Dr. Russell Fry, and Rev. Gene Madeira officiating. There will be no viewing. Friends may call on Saturday morning at Johnson Auditorium from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Mount Tunnel Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601 or to American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023.
