USDA Reconsidering Retailer Disclosure In Class II, III Recalls

The part of USDA's proposed change in disclosure rules that would require retailers to be named in case of a food recall is getting a second look. The agency is considering whether to apply it only to Class I recalls, rather than to all recalls as initially proposed, an agency spokesman told Meatingplace.com .

New disclosure rules have been debated for two years but remain in draft form. The proposed revision would provide consumers with more information about which retailers received products involved in a recall, but not as much additional information as was initially proposed — or that consumer groups and some legislators would like.

Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer has been quoted in published reports as saying that having retailer notification in the case of a Class I recall "is important." If this change is made, then retailers would not be disclosed in Class II or III recalls. The record-setting Hallmark/Westland beef recall was a Class II recall.
