The U.S. Department of Agriculture is preparing to release
updated labeling requirements for certain meat and poultry
products this summer, according to Progressive Grocer .
It is anticipated that USDA will require nutrition information
on all single-ingredient raw meat and poultry product labels
or mandate point-of-sale nutrition information.
A Tucson, Ariz.-based in-store pilot test program determined
providing detailed nutritional information on meat products
could increase sales.
Several industry associations are planning to host a meeting
early this month to discuss the new policy.
"The industry has been working together as a coalition since
the mid-1980s to ensure that consumers have access to nutrition
information at the meat case so they can make informed purchasing
decisions," Dagmar Farr, vice president of legislative and
consumer affairs at the Food Marketing Institute, told Progressive
Grocer.
